Little did Andy know, when he took up photography at the age of 11, that his hobby was excellent therapy for undiagnosed autism and ADHD. He enjoyed going out into the landscape, alone with his thoughts and his camera and capturing the beauty in the natural world.

When he emigrated to Australia nearly 20 years ago and settled in the South Coast, he became entranced by this region’s incredible sunrises and sunsets. Capturing that light became an obsession. And now, nearly a quarter of a million photos later, he thinks he’s caught enough good ones to put on his first gallery exhibition.

The sun and its light is the central theme of all of Andy’s work, which embraces both traditional and abstract photography techniques. “My personal favourites are the macro shots, taken on the south coast’s beaches and the dunes at sunrise and sunset. For me, the abstract forms of the sun, the light and the dune grasses, created by shooting with a very wide aperture, capture some of the feeling of being on one of our beautiful beaches at that special time of the day.”

Diagnosed with autism and ADHD in adult-hood, Andy now realises that his photography is a way of dealing with the world, of mentally reseting and of fully exploring an enduring passion for light and colour.
