SD-Check – Tiny MacOS Utility to Test Your SD-Cards Before a Shoot

Made by yours truly

I was going through a small stack of SD-cards today and it occurred to me that it would handy to know if any of them were likely to fail on me – and so, I fired up Claude Code and created an app for MacOS called SD check which is now available for download – free of charge.

All you have to do is insert a card and it quickly runs through a series of checks: filesystem integrity, write protection, free space, write speed, and how many files are still on it.

If something’s wrong, it will flag it in the status screen and if everything’s fine, it’ll tell you that too.

What it checks

  • Filesystem health – identifies possible corruption

  • Write protection – notifies of the lock switch on the card

  • Free space – warns you when there’s not enough room

  • Write speed – flags slow cards that might be unsuitable for video

  • Files on card – reminds you if there are photos that haven’t been backed up yet

You can download the DMG from my website here. Or simply install via Homebrew:

brew tap repomonkey/tap
brew install --cask sdcheck
