Open Source Lightroom Clones Are Great – But Let’s Not Get Ahead of Ourselves

Over the years I have tested a huge number of photography related apps and utilities - everything from the top tier commercial giants to the lowliest of open source utilities.

Over the years I have tested a huge number of photography related apps and utilities – everything from the top tier commercial giants to the lowliest of open source utilities.

I’ve learned that price is absolutely no indication of quality, that a pretty interface is no guarantee of high quality output and that apps don’t always improve with age.

Lately open source apps have been thrust into the headlines like never before, largely thanks to the arrival (and let’s not kid ourselves – provocative marketing) of the ArtCraft suite of Adobe clones by Brandon Thomas.

And you’d think, given the rolling news coverage on the largest media platforms in the world (broadcast, online and print), that open source software such as LightCraft was a new idea, when in fact all that is really new is the presentation.

You can’t argue with Brandon’s ambitions. He decided to take on the biggest creative software developer on the planet and undermine their entire product line with perfectly replicated clones and he’s inching closer to achieving that aim with every passing day.
