Why Your Photography Experiments Fail

And what you can do about it.

Y
ou fire-up YouTube and cast your eye over the thumbnails the algorithm thinks will tempt you to click. As you scroll down the page a video catches your eye, it’s discussing a photographic technique that you’ve previously thought about trying – and it’s so good that it inspires you to head out with your camera and try it for yourself.

But when you get home and eagerly import your photos onto your computer, you realise that they’re crap – boring, badly composed and somehow worse than if you’d just stayed home. You select-all and delete and resign yourself to the fact that you’re just a shit photographer destined to take uninspiring photographs forever.

But before you consign your photographic passion to the scrapheap of history, what if the experiment was always going to fail, not because you’re a bad photographer, but because you gave yourself an impossible brief?
