The beach sand slopes very gently off into the deeper ocean at Gerroa – there is no sudden drop-off and very little in the way of sandbars to surprise anyone wading out into the water. This makes it an ideal beach for kids because they can walk out to a depth they’re happy with and not have any surprises lurking behind the incoming waves. It also means you get great big expanses of highly reflective sand which is perfect for capturing the sunset colours.
In spring of 2015, when I took this photograph, I had the beach largely to myself, save for a few late night walkers and a couple of surfers. Then I found these three seabirds and loved the pattern they created.
