No Fusion: Film Looks Without the Phone Look

Reviewing an alternative to Halide

Note: this is the extended article version of the review on YouTube

No Fusion –
App Store Link – Website – $15/year or $50 single purchase

I
t was the developers behind the Halide camera app that first came up with the idea of trying to bypass the iPhone’s computational photography pipeline. The idea was to create more natural looking images, similar to the ones you might take on an actual camera, rather than the highly processed, artificially light, stupidly sharpened shots you get in the default camera app.

Since Halide, other developers have released camera apps with a similar promise: the reduction in in-camera processing, and photos that don’t look like CGI renders.

One of those apps has been quietly doing its thing for over four years now, built by a solo developer in China, largely flying under the radar in the English-speaking photography world. It’s called No Fusion, I’ve had it wired to my Action Button for months now, and I think it’s time we talked about why.
