DXO Compressed DNG Compatibility Testing
Good news for Mac users, not so much for Windows

Everyone is impressed with DXO’s new compressed DNG file format which was released first in PureRAW 6 a couple of weeks ago and then in Photolab 9.6 a few days ago. However there have been questions over compatability and so I thought I’d do a bit of testing for everyone.
I tried editing one of my Fuji RAW files converted to compressed DNG in PureRAW 6 in as many RAW editors as I could lay my hands on and here are the results. Mac first, then Windows.
Mac compatibility is excellent. 16 out of 19 apps tested work fine, covering pretty much the entire mainstream editing ecosystem. Adobe’s full suite, Capture One, Affinity, Luminar Neo, On1 – all good. For Mac users this is essentially a non-issue.
Windows is a different story. Only 2 out of 5 Windows apps tested work – and one of those failures is Windows Photos, which is about as basic as it gets and was with the RAW loader installed.
The Affinity split is interesting. Works on Mac, fails on Windows. That suggests the issue isn’t with the DNG format itself but with how the Windows version of certain apps handles it -a codec or implementation problem rather than a fundamental incompatibility.
