Actually Good Photography Videos You May Have Missed (Holiday Edition)

My recommended videos from the last few weeks, little something to watch in that weird gap between Xmas and New Years.

The last one of these was well received, so here’s another batch of high quality photography related videos that I have found on YouTube. Just a bit of inspiration, a bit of knowledge and a bit of humour for good measure. Happy weekend, guys.

Creative B&W Conversion Technique

It’s always interesting to see a new twist on a post-processing technique and I must admit I’d never heard of this one before. It’s a reverse‑masking Lightroom workflow for black‑and‑white: convert to monochrome, drop global exposure to near‑black, then selectively re‑light important elements to control focus and mood.

Parr’s Proven Techniques for Capturing Stunning Street Photography

Bit of tough love here from England’s finest street photographer – the brilliant Martin Parr who passed away recently. Favourite quote from this, ”If you sit there saying ‘I want to be a famous photographer’, you’ll never do it. The people who succeed aren’t interested in fame, they’re interested in the connection.”

I Don’t Want to Give Up Shooting Pictures

David Hurn is a Magnum photographer who photographed everything from the Hungarian uprising to Sean Connery and the Beatles. Some great wisdom in here from an all-round decent bloke.

Magnific AI Upscaler

Unmesh Dinda runs the most popular Photoshop channel on YouTube and in this video he takes a look at a new upscaling model called Magnific. Not sure I’m convinced the upscale doesn’t change the person, but the results are very high quality.

DJI Talks About the DJI Ban – iPhoneDo

Nice work here by Faruk of iPhoneDo talking directly to DJI, straight from the source, about the forthcoming protectionist ban on DJI drones instigated by the Trump government.

Paul McCartney: Rearview Mirror

Great casual chat with Paul McCartney and a retrospective of the photographs his shot at the height of the Beatles fame. Some great wisdom in here too, my favourite that Paul attributes to Alan Ginsbery on the subject of over-thinking things: “First thought, best thought.”

How Street Photographers are Invisible

Taking candid street photographs is something that everyone struggles with. It’s the cringeworthy embarrassment of getting ‘rumbled’ as you take the shot or the quiet, irrational-but-not-entirely fear that today’s street portrait ends with you being yelled at, chased, or punched. Some great techniques to get over that in this video.
