About me
I’m Andy Hutchinson. I make YouTube videos, write a Substack, build the odd Mac app and take photographs, and I’ve been a tech journalist for about 40 years, so I’m very hard to impress.
What I make
- YouTube, photography: software, gear, drones, AI and the more questionable corners of social media. The reviews are long, in-depth and honest, because a 90-second unboxing tells you nothing.
- YouTube, Mostly Mac: my Apple-only channel, launched in August 2026, covering Mac software, utilities and the occasional tech industry sin. It’s the same approach with a smaller colour palette.
- Substack: RAW & Unfiltered: Photography in the Real World.
- Free Mac apps: when the right tool doesn’t exist, I build it and give it away.
- No sponsors, no affiliate links. If I recommend something, it’s because I think it’s good, not because someone is paying me.
Where I’m from
I’m a native of the UK, brought up in Hertfordshire, just north of London. After studying English and Journalism at Middlesex University, I moved to Bath and joined Future Publishing, where I started as a staff writer and ended up as an editor. Later I went freelance from the Cotswolds, which was my home for about five years and is outstandingly beautiful. Over the years I wrote for Amiga Format, Your Sinclair, Tomorrow’s World Magazine, The Net and Mac Format, and I’ve been a Mac user since 1989. In 2004 I emigrated to Australia with my wife and son and settled on the South Coast of New South Wales, where I’ve been ever since.
The photography
I’ve been taking photographs for over 35 years, and seriously for the last 20 or so. It started with an old Instamatic and a darkroom in the family bathroom: a beach towel over the window and Mum’s kitchen tongs for handling the paper. Reviewing gadgets for magazines meant a steady stream of new cameras, but my own was a humble point-and-shoot for years. These days I shoot Fujifilm (X-T4 and X-T5), always in RAW, plus a DJI Mavic 2 Pro that is still going strong and gets me to all the places I can’t walk to.
I like landscapes, night skies, long exposures, wildlife and the view from a bit higher up. Most of my photos and videos are taken in and around the South Coast, where you can go from rainforest to red dust via verdant pasture in half a day. I live near the coast and a river, so both turn up a lot. I’m also the official show photographer for the Berry Show, and on 22 July 2028 I’ll be standing in the path of a total solar eclipse with a camera and very high hopes.
The day job
I run Web Design Solutions NSW with my wife, which is why I know more about hosting control panels than any photographer should.
If you’d like to licence any of my content, be it words, photos or videos, please email me. If you’re a company that would like to work with me, drop me a line, but read the bit about sponsors first.
