Photo of the Day – Shoalhaven Heads – 25/03/17

Shoalhaven Heads
Hot off the presses, here’s a shot from this morning’s sunrise on Seven Mile Beach. Interesting note about this shot from a technical perspective. The lens that I use for most of my shots is a very wide angle 10-22mm. About three years ago, I fell on this lens down at Camel Rock (trying to get over the rocks to Horsehead at high tide – fellow photographers will know what I mean!) and broke something inside it. It hasn’t auto-focused since (yes, pretty much every photo I’ve taken since has been manually focused) and it also comes apart quite easily. Over the years I have discovered I can kind of emulate a lens called a tilt-shift to create some cool effects that heavily blur portions of the image far beyond the aperture it is ordinarily capable of (f4.5). And that’s what I used for this shot on the dunes, as the sun was coming up over the horizon. Nice bit of swell down at the beach this morning and a not completely shit weather forecast for today. Alright team, keep it real and I’ll catch you all tomorrow. πŸ™‚

Photo of the Day – Sailors Beach in Hyams Beach – 23/03/17

Sailors Beach
The unsettled weather just keeps on trucking here in South Coast NSW. The rain has backed off slightly but considering we were told it would be a hotter and drier autumn than usual, I’m guessing the Bureau of Meteorology will be checking its medium term modelling software – lol. However, the skies are at least a bit more broken this week, which has given the opportunity for some good sunrises and sunsets. Yesterday I had an inkling that the cloud would be perfect for a colourful sunrise so I headed down to one of my favourite spots – Sailors Beach in Hyams Beach down on Jervis Bay. There were a couple of other photographers on the beach (you can see them in the surf on the right of the photo there) who were photographing the sunrise from the water, but other than that it was pretty quiet. I flew the drone and shot a cool timelapse and got some great shots with the DSLR. This was my favourite from the morning with the just-risen sun lighting up the little creek at the northern end of the beach. Have a great Thursday guys πŸ™‚

Photo of the Day – Gerroa – 22/03/17

Gerroa
Well blimey, what do you know, strike a light, blow me down with a feather, lawks a lawdy, heavens above – we finally got a sunset last night. Now the irony of this (given how much I have been complaining about the last 30 days of grey shite) is that I’d have missed the best of it. I had my nose buried in my computer screen and was oblivious to the clouds and the gap on the horizon. Fortunately Ryan Twemlow (son of fellow south coast photographer Greg) did spot it and Greg was kind enough to message me and caused me to rotate my head 90ΒΊ to the left and look out of the window, and before the ‘ping’ noise of that text had died away, I was in my car and en route to Gerroa. So, it turned out to be a classic Gerroa sunset, enjoyed by a few lucky souls down on the beach. Very energising it was too and accompanied by a vibrant rainbow to the east. This was my favourite shot from the evening – awesome colours, great reflections and exactly the sort of scene I love photographing. Have a great Wednesday team and if you want to see what I got up to for sunrise today, be sure to check out my Instagram story feed at http://instagram.com/sublimesouth πŸ™‚

Not going to comment on the weather. Nope. Not going there. Don’t mind me building this Ark here. Apologies for the mess. Here’s a shot from Hyams Beach taken with the drone a couple of months ago. You can see Sailors Beach here and in the distance HMAS Cresswell and over in the distance where the sun is just rising behind the clouds is the western edge of Booderee National Park. Such an awesome spot πŸ™‚

Narooma
So many amazing locations in south coast NSW and I always love pointing the car south and exploring them. This is Narooma as seen from above Wagonga Head with the hills of Bodalla in the background. Awesome place to stay and to explore the Eurobodalla Shire region. We always try and eat at the Quarterdeck cafe on Wagonga Inlet when we’re in town – great eats right on the water. Alright team, have a chilled Saturday and may the odds be ever in your favour πŸ™‚

Photo of the Day – Honeymoon Bay – 17/03/17

Honeymoon Bay
How about a blast of sunshine on a grey and rainy day? This is the famous Honeymoon Bay in Jervis Bay as seen from a birds eye (perhaps a wedge-tailed sea eagle?) view. If it looks an idyllic spot, then you’d be right. Such a lovely spot does get very busy during the summer, but time your visit right and you can have the place to yourself – at least for a little while. If you’re into snorkelling it’s an awesome spot to float around in, but equally nice for just relaxing and with trees right down to the water’s edge, there’s always some shade to be found. Alrighty team, have a great Thursday and as you slide down the banisters of life may the splinters never point the wrong way.

Photo of the Day – Black Head Reserve – 14/03/17

Black Head Reserve
Alright folks. The weather this weekend was a great improvement on the previous three weeks, but it’s all thunder, lightning and rain again today! Here’s a shot I took down at Black Head Reserve in Gerroa at the weekend as the sun disappeared behind the escarpment. If you’re familiar with the area, that’s actually Mount Cambewarra the sun’s going down behind, where you can visit the lookout and have an awesome meal at the cafe there. Anyway – please with how this one came out – Black Head is such a photogenic spot. Happy Tuesday one and all πŸ™‚

Photo of the Day – Murrays Beach – 12/03/17

Murrays Beach
Hello, hello, hello and a very happy Sunday to you all. This morning I headed down to Murrays Beach in Jervis Bay. This beach remains my favourite and I love visiting it at this time of the year when it’s nice and quiet. I once met a lady on this beach sifting through the sand near some rocks with a fork – turned out she’d lost her wedding ring – I suggested speaking to the local cops to find someone with a metal detector. Not sure if she ever got the ring back or not, hope she did. Anyway, there wasn’t much in the way of high-level cloud to spice up the sunrise this morning, but there was a nice little bank on the horizon which got lit up as the sun emerged behind Governor’s Head. Oh and hello to the Freunds, who I had a lovely chat with down on the beach – hope you get out on the water soon! Righty then, that’ll do us. Till next time, team πŸ™‚

Black Head Reserve
Alrighty then team. How are we all this fine Thursday? The weather here continues to be turbulent and very cloudy. In search of a little bit of colour, I headed to Black Head Reserve in Gerroa and pointed the camera south-west towards the sunset. It was very windy and wet, but it was nice to get out and blow a few of the cobwebs away. πŸ™‚

Photo of the Day – Nellies Glen – 06/03/17

Nellies Glen
With so much rain having fallen over the last two weeks there was only one logical place to head when it finally stopped – the Southern Highlands and waterfall country. I headed up to Carrington Falls, but called in at adjoining Nellies Glen first. These guys were from the UK and exploring Australia for a year. Nice place to sit and enjoy the moment. πŸ™‚

Photo of the Day – Shoalhaven Heads – 04/03/17

Shoalhaven Heads
As I’ve gained more experience, so the way that I process photos has changed too. When I took this particular shot, seven years ago, down at Hay Avenue, I processed it using various techniques in Photoshop. But over time I’ve realised that my original interpretations were heavy-handed and so I’ve been revisiting the digital negatives of quite a lot of my early digital photos. Unlike my original release of this image, this is one single shot, not a combination of exposures. It has been edited simply from the original negative (called a RAW file) and is a much truer representation of the sky on this particular sunset than my prior efforts. This was one of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen. I took it at one of my favourite shots taken at Hay Avenue in Shoalhaven Heads which will always be one of my favourite ‘go to’ spots, though it has become increasingly popular over the years. Anyway – hope you’re all enjoying your weekend – have a good one and I’ll catch you all tomorrow πŸ™‚

Gerroa
Hey gang, guess what! Yep, it’s still raining. The old drone hasn’t been out of its box in 10 days and the DSLR is having trouble distinguishing between the various shades of grey in the sky. Much more on its way here too, with a punchy little low pressure system sitting off the coast and about to drop 100mm of wet on us this weekend alone. Still, it could be worse, I could be on holiday down here – lol. Anyway, you guys may recall the amazing sunset I was fortunate enough to photograph down on Seven Mile about two weeks ago. Well, I also flew the drone that evening and caught some cool shots before I decided to let the big sensor on my Canon take the strain of capturing all that colour. This was the last image I took before landing, as the oranges and reds started to really take hold of the sky. Have a good one guys, enjoy your weekend, and if you’re local to me – stay safe! Shoalhaven Heads
Alright guys. Welcome to a new week. Firstly, in case you missed it as you weren’t online over the weekend – I just released my new video, which you can find here – https://www.facebook.com/andyhutchinsonphotography/videos/1220936961336707 and also on YouTube in much higher quality here – https://youtu.be/kqAgLDraWfY. Thanks for all the great feedback – it makes me want to go out and make a bigger and better one! Anyway, here’s today’s shot. I could see from the cloud yesterday evening that we were likely to get some cool colours in the sky, so I headed over to Shoalhaven Heads with the drone. I flew from the middle boat ramp and enjoyed a great blast of colour that was at its best about 10 minutes after sunset. Okay guys – thanks again – stay tuned for more πŸ™‚

Hyams Beach
TFI Friday! Am I right? Hope you’ve all had a swinging time of it this week. By which I mean enjoyable, not that other kind of swinging – lol. Anyway, today’s photo was taken down on famous Sailors Beach in Hyams Beach during a cloudy but atmospheric sunrise. This was a quarter of a second exposure to get a nice bit of blurred movement in those little waves. You’re unlikely to ever catch a wave at this beach, but it’s one hell of a nice place to just float around in the ocean contemplating how awesome life is. Fun times! Alright folks, catch you on the flip side πŸ™‚

How’s everyone’s week proceeding? I’ve been out and about shooting some additional footage for a new video I hope to release fairly soon. I wanted to get it done today because wetter weather is on the way which of course makes flying the drone impossible. Anyway, here’s a recent sunset from Seven Mile, sending sunshine and warmth your way if you’re in colder climes. Cheers team πŸ™‚

Narrawallee Inlet
Hello everyone. This morning I headed down the coast to Narrawallee near Mollymook. I’d been meaning to catch a sunrise there for some time and great conditions meant I got lots of cool drone shots. My favourite from the day was this one though, which looks like a watercolour painting .The darker colours are the shadow of the little hill at the Inlet. Cheers team. πŸ™‚

Gerroa
How are we all this fine Sunday. We’ve been having some turbulent weather here in New South Wales and when it hasn’t been as hot as the sun it’s been stormy. And today we’re transitioning between the two. I headed down to Gerroa on Friday night and enjoyed a great, but *very* windy sunset down on Seven Mile Beach. There was no chance of flying the drone (in fact it has been in its box all week) and so I enjoyed an hour of Seven Mile sunset with my DSLR. I got some keepers out of the evening, including this one which I took about a minute after sunset. Follow me on Instagram (http://instagram.com/sublimesouth) and you can enjoy moments like this live from the beach in my Story tab. Cheers team πŸ™‚

Currarong
Up on the northern edge of the Beecroft Peninsula, above Jervis Bay, you find the sleepy seaside town of Currarong. Despite the fact that it’s ocean facing, the swell is nearly always calm here and it has long been a popular spot for families. The creek is a great place to splash about in and you also have numerous cute nearby beaches. The fish and chips are excellent too. Happy Friday team πŸ™‚
